Tommy Lee Jones

Today, September 15 (1946) is the birthday of well-known, award-winning actor Tommy Lee Jones. To me he is most famous for his role as Woodrow F. Call in the outstanding 1989 TV miniseries Lonesome Dove, based on the best-seller novel of the same name by Larry McMurtry. This photo shows him (left) in that role along with Robert Duvall, who played Augustus “Gus” McCrae. The miniseries was hugely successful. It revitalized Westerns as a genre and the miniseries as a format. If you have not watched the six-hour epic yet, do so now!

Jones was very appropriate for the role of former Texas Ranger Call who, along with his partner McCrae, takes a herd of cattle and horses all the way from Texas to Montana. Jones was born and raised in Texas, lives in Texas, ranches in Texas, speaks fluent Spanish, and is a serious polo player. He graduated from Harvard (where he was a roommate of Al Gore) cum laude with a BA in English, but he immediately went into acting.
